How to Create Your Perfect Morning Routine

Mornings without a proper morning routine is for most people, I included, complete chaos paired with a perfect storm. I’ve learned over the years that there are in fact some hacks that can immediate this pain. Here are the best ones I’ve come across so far.
5 seconds is all it takes!
Getting out of bed
I honestly don’t get. How some people can enjoy not only waking up but also getting up. This has been my Achilles heel for as long as I care to remember. What ultimately made me gain control of my zombie-brain was a hack by Mel Robbins that she refers to as the 5 Second Rule.
The full specter of adaptations for this rule and all the proven science behind it are truly amazing but beside the scope of this article. More importantly, is that before I learned it even my morning routine was a continuous failure.
Fast forward till today, I use the 5 Second Rule to 5-4-3-2-1-GO! myself out of bed the moment the alarm bell rings. It’s by no means any less painful to get up. The difference is that I actually get up, and without snoozing. Now, make your bed immediately. If all else ends up failing today, at least you got this part right, right?. That’s a victory!
The infamous morning shower
You’ve probably gathered by now that I’m clearly no morning person, nor have I a particular desire to get wet and uncomfortable either. The only reason why I shower as a part of my morning routine is that I’ve made it so uncomfortably that my mind and body go into an instant flight response.

I start with water temperature as close as possible to the bed I just left unwillingly. I continue with all showery necessities before preparing myself using the 5 Second Rule once more. Then, 5-4-3-2-1-GO! and I turn the temperature nob to a sub-zero-mode for about a minute before returning to comfy-bed-mode again.
Besides feeling violated by myself, I’m so freaking awake now that I radiate energy. Thing is that this energy is what keeps me functioning at a high-performance level all the way until lunsj. Think it’s worth it? I think so. Try I yourself for a week and notice how the world around your seemingly slows down.
Prepare – Eat – Drink
If you’ve read my article How to create your perfect evening routine you know the importance of preparing at short todo-list the night before. Either way, it’s extremely important to know what’s ahead of you later in the day and reviewing your todo-list is a great way of being prepared.
Reviewing your list before breakfast makes sense since you really haven’t gotten around to doing much thinking yet. At this time you’re still a blank slate with hopefully no conflicting thoughts yet. This lets you process what’s on the list more efficiently.
Breakfast time! I’m not going to lecture you on what to eat specifically, but a healthy one is obviously a good one for prolonged energy levels throughout the day. Sugary stuff will pick you up by your hair and smash your head in the ground as soon as your body runs out of it.
…coffee and tea in moderate amounts are good for both body mind and soul
We all get a bit dehydrated during the night so ample amounts of it in the morning as well as throughout the day is necessary to keep all systems in check. If you’ve tried my cold shower hack, chances are you really don’t need coffee with breakfast, but both coffee and tea in moderate amounts are good for both body mind and soul so have at it.
As a small yet important side note to breakfast time, this is often the first the only time you see your family before the daily challenges take hold. Use this time to greet your loved one with a smile, gratitude, and respect.
Head to work
Some work from home, but most need to commute to work. If this entails a bus, train or subway, you’re in luck. At least compared to the sorry asses that have to endure rush-hour in a car.
In both instances, I would suggest you listen to some music or a good audiobook. The perk that commuters have is the ability to watch other people (not) handling their morning routine and succumb to stress. It’s quite relaxing actually.
Now, your heading to work so try to envision what would be the perfect outcome of this day. What would you accomplish? Who would you meet and what opportunities would that, in turn, lead to? You see, a lot of science points to the fact that envisioning great outcomes is actually takes you halfway to accomplishing it. Why not let the Universe stack the odds in favor of you rather than against you?
A smile can brighten even the darkest of shadows.
Last, but not least. It’s not all about you. Your wellbeing is tied to those around you so enter the office with a smile. Try to show as much gratitude and helpfulness as you can muster up towards colleagues, clients, cleaning staff or whomever you run into throughout your day. I’ve had my share of struggles, but I attacked my struggles with the same intentional and positive stubbornness that gets me out of bed every morning with good help from my tailored morning routine.
