What is the 5 Second Rule?

The 5 Second Rule is a method, first conceptualized by Mel Robbins who went on to write a New York’s best seller understandably called The 5 Second Rule.

The rule states that within the first 5 seconds of you being presented with an opportunity or challenge, your mind finds a way to deal with the situation in the simplest and least mental or physical exhausting way possible. This happens despite the possibly apparent, sensible or rational upside to doing the opposite.

The rule also states that just as quickly as your mind can hijack your desire to act, you can regain control and act based on what you actually want, rather than how you feel about acting in itself.
